Leak Finder, Inc. Has The Technology
We evaluate manufacturing facilities using an innovative technology developed by FLIR known as the ThermaCAM® GasFindIR thermal imaging video camera. Natural gas production, processing, transmission and gathering lines, and equipment are evaluated utilizing specially-equipped helicopters and vehicles to perform Laser Methane Assessments.
Our confidential surveys provide both qualitative and quantitative information that help our clients determine the best course of action. Qualitative surveys are performed to augment existing Leak Detection and Repair Programs (LDAR). Leaks are quantified utilizing equipment, such as Bacharach High Volume Samplers, that provide ‘real time’ readings of natural gas leak rates in Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM), velometers, and mathematical calculations that assess the cost of a leaking component. Energy audits that identify and quantify leaks are performed for clients so they have documentation of the cost of these leaks and can prioritize recommended repair activities.
Our data shows an average one (1) day leak survey can identify natural gas, compressed air, oxygen, argon, and nitrogen leaks that, if repaired, can save our clients hundreds of thousands of dollars.
In fact, Leak Finder, Inc. personnel often find hundreds of leaks in an average survey with one actual survey performed at a heavy manufacturing facility resulting in nearly $1,000,000 in annual cost savings, subsequent to repair. The highly specialized ThermaCAM GasFindIR infrared camera captures ‘real time’ thermal images of gas leaks and enables the operator to ‘see’ emissions of gases such as methane, propane, butane, aromatics, sulfur hexafluoride, FREON, ammonia, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. We also use innovative technology, developed by UE Systems, to ultrasonically determine sources of gas leaks such as argon, helium, nitrogen, oxygen and compressed air. Our traditional infrared cameras, also developed by FLIR, identify building-related moisture, electrical, and mechanical issues.

Pipeline / Rural Area Laser Methane Assessments – Helicopter
This segment of Leak Finder, Inc.’s tool box is quite impressive. The Aerial Laser Methane Assessment is conducted by a specially equipped helicopter that greatly increases the speed of surveying, performs data logging of leak levels and routes, downloads post-survey reports, insures enhanced pipeline integrity, and reduces operations and maintenance expenses.
This airborne-based gas leak detection offers a dramatic change to the conventional natural gas leak inspection methods used by natural gas companies. By utilizing a laser, Leak Finder, Inc. quickly and efficiently detects natural gas leaks while the helicopter-based system flies the transmission pipeline. The combination of a laptop, optical laser unit and electronic unit work together to detect and track leaks, providing GPS coordinates to precisely pinpoint leak locations. This new technology has proven to be highly sensitive, economical and extremely reliable, while improving public safety.
Pipeline / City Street Laser Methane Assessments – Vehicle
The final component in Leak Finder, Inc.’s outstanding toolbox
is the vehicle-based Laser Methane Assessment. This specially equipped vehicle detects gas leaks by simply driving down the street. Leaks are detected both in front and from the sides of the driving path while driving at normal speeds.
While this method has also proven highly sensitive, it is the perfect diagnostic tool for detection of gas leakage in urban areas or on city streets. With a video camera and GPS capabilities, this method provides valuable information allowing Leak Finder, Inc. to detect both above ground and underground leaks at up to 50 meters from the mobile lab (vehicle).
