Unusually dry weather in 2010 may have reduced the natural sealing effect of moist earth, leading to some terrible, explosive emissions of natural gas from pipelines. Mobile (Street Evaluating Laser Methane Assessment) is the answer. Mobile can be used on active streets to detect methane emissions with no shut-down of traffic. The sensitivity of the bumper-mounted sensors are superior to any hand-held devices, while the operator-directed rooftop unit can be used for difficult to reach subject areas (e.g. behind fences, beneath bridges, etc.). With the kinds of consequences that undetected gas leaks can bring, it’s hard to justify not putting Mobile to work!
